Kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis) is caused by the protozoan Leishmania donovani and transmitted by the sandfly. The tsetse fly spreads sleeping sickness, the housefly spreads enteric diseases mechanically and ticks spread several infections such as Lyme disease. It is common in eastern India.
