If A and B are independent events with P(A)=1/3 and P(B)=1/4, then P(A∪ B) is equal to

Single correct option

If AA and BB are independent events with P(A)=13P(A)=\frac13 and P(B)=14P(B)=\frac14, then P(A∪B)P(A\cup B) is equal to
  1. A. 712\frac{7}{12}
  2. B. 112\frac1{12}
  3. C. 12\frac12
  4. D. 512\frac{5}{12}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 12\frac12

Independence gives P(A∩B)=13⋅14=112P(A\cap B)=\frac13\cdot\frac14=\frac1{12}. Then P(A∪B)=13+14−112=4+3−112=12P(A\cup B)=\frac13+\frac14-\frac1{12}=\frac{4+3-1}{12}=\frac12. Trap: 712\frac7{12} is P(A)+P(B)P(A)+P(B) without subtracting the overlap, and 112\frac1{12} is the intersection.
