If A⊆ B, then P(A)≤ P(B). 2. For any two events, P(A∪ B)=P(A)+P(B).

Single correct option

Which of the statements is/are correct? 1. If A⊆BA\subseteq B, then P(A)≤P(B)P(A)\le P(B). 2. For any two events, P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B).
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1 only

If A⊆BA\subseteq B, every outcome of AA is in BB, so P(A)≤P(B)P(A)\le P(B); statement 1 is true. In general P(A∪B)=P(A)+P(B)−P(A∩B)P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)-P(A\cap B), so statement 2 holds only for mutually exclusive events and is false.
