If the roots of the equation x^2-6x+k=0 differ by 2, then k equals

Single correct option

If the roots of the equation x2−6x+k=0x^2-6x+k=0 differ by 22, then kk equals
  1. A. 5
  2. B. 6
  3. C. 8
  4. D. 9
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 8

Let the roots be α,β\alpha,\beta with α+β=6\alpha+\beta=6 and α−β=2\alpha-\beta=2, so α=4,β=2\alpha=4,\beta=2 and k=αβ=8k=\alpha\beta=8. Equivalently (α−β)2=36−4k=4(\alpha-\beta)^2=36-4k=4 gives k=8k=8. Value 99 would make the roots equal, and 55 gives roots 1,51,5 differing by 44.
