Single correct option

In a geometric progression the third term is 1212 and the sixth term is 9696. The first term is
  1. A. 66
  2. B. 33
  3. C. 22
  4. D. 44
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 33

Dividing, ar5ar2=r3=9612=8\dfrac{ar^5}{ar^2}=r^3=\dfrac{96}{12}=8, so r=2r=2. Then ar2=12ar^2=12 gives 4a=124a=12 and a=3a=3. A frequent error is to take r=8r=8 (the ratio of three steps) and conclude a=12/64a=12/64.
