Single correct option

The mean of five observations is 1212. If one observation 88 is replaced by 1818, the new mean is
  1. A. 1414
  2. B. 1212
  3. C. 1313
  4. D. 1515
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1414

The original sum is 5×12=605\times12=60. After the replacement the sum is 60−8+18=7060-8+18=70, so the new mean is 705=14\frac{70}{5}=14. The value 1212 ignores the change, and 1515 adds the difference 1010 without dividing by 55 and then confuses it.
