Single correct option

The distance of the origin from the line 5x−12y+39=05x-12y+39=0 is
  1. A. 3939
  2. B. 33
  3. C. 3917\frac{39}{17}
  4. D. 133\frac{13}{3}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 33

Distance of (0,0)(0,0) from ax+by+c=0ax+by+c=0 is ∣c∣a2+b2=3925+144=3913=3\frac{|c|}{\sqrt{a^2+b^2}}=\frac{39}{\sqrt{25+144}}=\frac{39}{13}=3. The common slips are to leave the denominator out (39) or to add the coefficients, 5+12=175+12=17, instead of taking a2+b2\sqrt{a^2+b^2}.
