The line through (1,2) that cuts off equal non-zero intercepts on the coordinate axes is

Single correct option

The line through (1,2)(1,2) that cuts off equal non-zero intercepts on the coordinate axes is
  1. A. x−y=−1x-y=-1
  2. B. 2x+y=42x+y=4
  3. C. x+2y=5x+2y=5
  4. D. x+y=3x+y=3
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) x+y=3x+y=3

Equal non-zero intercepts aa give xa+ya=1\frac{x}{a}+\frac{y}{a}=1, i.e. x+y=ax+y=a. Passing through (1,2)(1,2) gives a=3a=3. The other three lines also pass through (1,2)(1,2) but their intercepts are (−1,1)(-1,1), (2,4)(2,4) and (5,52)(5,\tfrac52), which are unequal. Merely passing through the point is not enough; check the intercepts.
