The fundamental period of the function f(x)=cos 3x/2 is

Single correct option

The fundamental period of the function f(x)=cos⁡3x2f(x)=\cos\dfrac{3x}{2} is
  1. A. 2π3\dfrac{2\pi}{3}
  2. B. 3π3\pi
  3. C. 3π2\dfrac{3\pi}{2}
  4. D. 4π3\dfrac{4\pi}{3}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 4π3\dfrac{4\pi}{3}

The function cos⁡kx\cos kx has period 2π∣k∣\dfrac{2\pi}{|k|}. With k=32k=\dfrac32 the period is 2π×23=4π32\pi\times\dfrac23=\dfrac{4\pi}{3}. Check: x→x+4π3x\to x+\dfrac{4\pi}3 changes the argument by 2π2\pi. The option 3π3\pi results from multiplying by kk instead of dividing, and 2π3\dfrac{2\pi}3 from inverting the factor.
