The minimum value of sin ^6x+cos ^6x is

Single correct option

The minimum value of sin⁡6x+cos⁡6x\sin^6x+\cos^6x is
  1. A. 00
  2. B. 18\dfrac18
  3. C. 14\dfrac14
  4. D. 12\dfrac12
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 14\dfrac14

sin⁡6x+cos⁡6x=(sin⁡2x+cos⁡2x)3−3sin⁡2xcos⁡2x=1−34sin⁡22x\sin^6x+\cos^6x=(\sin^2x+\cos^2x)^3-3\sin^2x\cos^2x=1-\frac34\sin^22x. This is least when sin⁡22x=1\sin^22x=1, giving 1−34=141-\frac34=\frac14. The value 00 cannot occur because sin⁡x\sin x and cos⁡x\cos x never vanish together.
