Single correct option

The sides of a triangle, taken in order, are represented by vectors a⃗,b⃗,c⃗\vec a,\vec b,\vec c of lengths 33, 55 and 77 units so that their sum is the zero vector. When a⃗\vec a and b⃗\vec b are drawn from a common initial point, the angle between them is
  1. A. 30∘30^\circ
  2. B. 90∘90^\circ
  3. C. 60∘60^\circ
  4. D. 120∘120^\circ
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 60∘60^\circ

From c⃗=−(a⃗+b⃗)\vec c=-(\vec a+\vec b), ∣c⃗∣2=∣a⃗∣2+∣b⃗∣2+2a⃗⋅b⃗|\vec c|^2=|\vec a|^2+|\vec b|^2+2\vec a\cdot\vec b, i.e. 49=9+25+30cos⁡θ49=9+25+30\cos\theta. So cos⁡θ=1530=12\cos\theta=\dfrac{15}{30}=\dfrac12 and θ=60∘\theta=60^\circ. The angle 120∘120^\circ is the angle in the triangle formed by the sides, which is the supplement.
