Numerical answer
In a circle, a chord of length 16 cm is at a distance of 6 cm from the centre. Another chord of length 12 cm is drawn parallel to it, on the opposite side of the centre. What is the distance (in cm) between the two chords?
Show answer and solution
Answer: 14
Radius: half-chord 8 and distance 6 give r = √(64 + 36) = 10 cm.
For the 12 cm chord, half-chord 6, distance from centre = √(100 − 36) = 8 cm.
On opposite sides of the centre, the distance between the chords = 6 + 8 = 14 cm.
(Had they been on the same side, the answer would be 8 − 6 = 2 cm — read the configuration carefully.)
