Numerical answer
In a circle of radius 13 cm, two parallel chords of lengths 24 cm and 10 cm lie on opposite sides of the centre. What is the distance (in cm) between the two chords?
Show answer and solution
Answer: 17
Distance of a chord from the centre = √(r² − (half-chord)²).
Chord 24: √(169 − 144) = 5 cm. Chord 10: √(169 − 25) = 12 cm.
On opposite sides of the centre, the distances add: 5 + 12 = 17 cm. (On the same side, it would be 12 − 5 = 7 cm.)
Chord 24: √(169 − 144) = 5 cm. Chord 10: √(169 − 25) = 12 cm.
On opposite sides of the centre, the distances add: 5 + 12 = 17 cm. (On the same side, it would be 12 − 5 = 7 cm.)
