Numerical answer
In a circle, a chord of length 24 cm is at a distance of 5 cm from the centre. What is the length (in cm) of a chord of the same circle that is at a distance of 12 cm from the centre?
Show answer and solution
Answer: 10
The perpendicular from the centre bisects a chord. For the 24 cm chord: half-chord 12, distance 5 ⇒ radius = √(12² + 5²) = 13 cm.
For a chord at distance 12: half-chord = √(13² − 12²) = √25 = 5 ⇒ chord = 10 cm.
For a chord at distance 12: half-chord = √(13² − 12²) = √25 = 5 ⇒ chord = 10 cm.
