Numerical answer

Two radioactive samples AA and BB contain initially NAN_A and NBN_B nuclei with NA/NB=4N_A/N_B=4. The half-life of AA is 1 h1\ \mathrm{h} and that of BB is 2 h2\ \mathrm{h}. The two samples have equal activity after a time tt hours. The value of tt is
Show answer and solution

Answer: 6

Activity is λN\lambda N with N=N0e−λtN=N_0e^{-\lambda t}. Since λ∝1/T1/2\lambda\propto1/T_{1/2}, the ratio of initial activities is AA(0)AB(0)=NANB⋅λAλB=4×21=8\dfrac{A_A(0)}{A_B(0)}=\dfrac{N_A}{N_B}\cdot\dfrac{\lambda_A}{\lambda_B}=4\times\dfrac{2}{1}=8. At time tt (hours): AA=AA(0) 2−t/1A_A=A_A(0)\,2^{-t/1} and AB=AB(0) 2−t/2A_B=A_B(0)\,2^{-t/2}. Equal activities require 8⋅2−t=2−t/28\cdot2^{-t}=2^{-t/2}, i.e. 23−t=2−t/22^{3-t}=2^{-t/2}, so 3−t=−t/23-t=-t/2 and t=6t=6. At that time AA has gone through 66 half-lives (factor 1/641/64) and BB through 33 (factor 1/81/8), so the activity ratio 8×164÷18=18\times\tfrac{1}{64}\div\tfrac18=1, confirming the result. Hence t=6t=6.
