Single correct option

The compound CoCl3⋅4NH3\mathrm{CoCl_3\cdot4NH_3} is an octahedral complex in which NH3\mathrm{NH_3} behaves as a strong-field ligand. One mole of its aqueous solution is treated with excess AgNO3\mathrm{AgNO_3} at once. Which of the following sets of statements is correct?
  1. A. 1 mol of AgCl precipitates; diamagnetic; two geometrical isomers, none of which is optically active
  2. B. 1 mol of AgCl precipitates; diamagnetic; two geometrical isomers, one of which is optically active
  3. C. 2 mol of AgCl precipitate; diamagnetic; two geometrical isomers, none of which is optically active
  4. D. 1 mol of AgCl precipitates; paramagnetic with μ=24\mu=\sqrt{24} BM; two geometrical isomers, none of which is optically active
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1 mol of AgCl precipitates; diamagnetic; two geometrical isomers, none of which is optically active

The compound with composition CoCl3⋅4NH3\mathrm{CoCl_3\cdot4NH_3} is [Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl[\mathrm{Co(NH_3)_4Cl_2}]\mathrm{Cl}: coordination number 6, with two Cl−\mathrm{Cl^-} inside the sphere and one ionisable Cl−\mathrm{Cl^-}, so only 1 mol of AgCl precipitates immediately. Cobalt is Co3+\mathrm{Co^{3+}}, 3d63d^6; with strong-field NH3\mathrm{NH_3} the configuration is t2g6eg0t_{2g}^6e_g^0, hence no unpaired electron and the complex is diamagnetic (μ=0\mu=0). The cation [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+[\mathrm{Co(NH_3)_4Cl_2}]^+ is of type [MA4B2]\mathrm{[MA_4B_2]}, which has two geometrical isomers, cis and trans. The trans isomer has several mirror planes, and the cis isomer also possesses a mirror plane (containing both Cl atoms and bisecting the two cis-NH3_3 pairs), so neither is optically active. Option (D) wrongly assumes high-spin d6d^6 (μ=24\mu=\sqrt{24} BM), (C) counts all chlorides, (B) confuses [MA4B2][\mathrm{MA_4B_2}] with [M(AA)2B2][\mathrm{M(AA)_2B_2}].
