Numerical answer

A coordination isomer of composition CrCl3⋅6H2O\mathrm{CrCl_3\cdot6H_2O} is dissolved in water to make a 0.100 mol kg−10.100\ \mathrm{mol\,kg^{-1}} solution that freezes 0.558 K0.558\ \mathrm{K} below the freezing point of water (Kf=1.86 K kg mol−1K_f=1.86\ \mathrm{K\,kg\,mol^{-1}}; the complex is stable and fully ionised). Excess AgNO3\mathrm{AgNO_3} is added to 200 mL200\ \mathrm{mL} of a 0.100 M0.100\ \mathrm{M} solution of the same isomer. Taking Ag=108\mathrm{Ag}=108 and Cl=35.5\mathrm{Cl}=35.5, find the mass in grams of AgCl\mathrm{AgCl} precipitated, correct to two decimal places.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 5.74

The van't Hoff factor follows from the freezing point depression: i=ΔTf/(Kfm)=0.558/(1.86×0.100)=3.00i=\Delta T_f/(K_fm)=0.558/(1.86\times0.100)=3.00. Among the hydrate isomers of CrCl3⋅6H2O\mathrm{CrCl_3\cdot6H_2O}, the species [Cr(H2O)6]Cl3[\mathrm{Cr(H_2O)_6}]\mathrm{Cl_3} would give i=4i=4, [Cr(H2O)5Cl]Cl2⋅H2O[\mathrm{Cr(H_2O)_5Cl}]\mathrm{Cl_2\cdot H_2O} gives i=3i=3 (one complex cation plus two chloride ions), [Cr(H2O)4Cl2]Cl⋅2H2O[\mathrm{Cr(H_2O)_4Cl_2}]\mathrm{Cl\cdot2H_2O} gives i=2i=2, and [Cr(H2O)3Cl3]⋅3H2O[\mathrm{Cr(H_2O)_3Cl_3}]\cdot3\mathrm{H_2O} gives i=1i=1. Hence the isomer is [Cr(H2O)5Cl]Cl2⋅H2O[\mathrm{Cr(H_2O)_5Cl}]\mathrm{Cl_2\cdot H_2O}, with two ionisable chlorides per formula unit; the coordinated chloride is not precipitated. Moles of complex in 200 mL200\ \mathrm{mL} =0.200×0.100=0.0200=0.200\times0.100=0.0200, so moles of free Cl−=0.0400\mathrm{Cl^-}=0.0400 and the mass of AgCl\mathrm{AgCl} =0.0400×143.5=5.74 g=0.0400\times143.5=5.74\ \mathrm{g}. Had one wrongly taken all three chlorides as ionisable, 8.61 g8.61\ \mathrm{g} would result, which is why the freezing point data are needed to fix the structure.
