Numerical answer

A wedge of mass M=1.0 kgM=1.0\ \mathrm{kg} with an inclined face at 60∘60^\circ to the horizontal rests on a smooth horizontal table and is free to slide. A block of mass m=4.0 kgm=4.0\ \mathrm{kg} is released from rest on the smooth inclined face. Take g=10 m s−2g=10\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. Find the magnitude of the normal force between the block and the wedge, in newton, while the block slides down.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 5

Let the wedge accelerate horizontally with AA and let NN be the contact force. Horizontal motion of the wedge: MA=Nsin⁡θMA=N\sin\theta. Perpendicular to the face the block has no motion relative to the wedge, so its acceleration component along the normal equals that of the wedge, giving mgcos⁡θ−N=mAsin⁡θmg\cos\theta-N=mA\sin\theta. Eliminating AA, N=Mmgcos⁡θM+msin⁡2θN=\dfrac{Mmg\cos\theta}{M+m\sin^2\theta}. With M=1M=1, m=4m=4, θ=60∘\theta=60^\circ: N=1×4×10×0.51+4×0.75=204=5 NN=\dfrac{1\times4\times10\times0.5}{1+4\times0.75}=\dfrac{20}{4}=5\ \mathrm{N}. (Check: A=Nsin⁡60∘/M=4.33 m s−2A=N\sin60^\circ/M=4.33\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}, and 4×10×0.5−5=15=4×4.33×0.8664\times10\times0.5-5=15=4\times4.33\times0.866.) Note that NN is much smaller than mgcos⁡θ=20 Nmg\cos\theta=20\ \mathrm{N} because the wedge recoils.
