Numerical answer

A particle is projected from a point on a fixed smooth inclined plane of angle θ=37∘\theta=37^\circ (sin⁡37∘=0.6\sin37^\circ=0.6) with speed uu in a direction perpendicular to the plane. Every collision with the plane is perfectly elastic and the motion is in the vertical plane containing the line of greatest slope. The distance along the plane between the 3rd3^{\text{rd}} and the 4th4^{\text{th}} impacts is 21 m21\ \mathrm{m}. Take g=10 m s−2g=10\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. The value of uu (in m s−1\mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}) is ______.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 4

Resolve motion along and perpendicular to the plane. Perpendicular to the plane the acceleration is gcos⁡θ=8g\cos\theta=8 and the speed reverses at each elastic impact, so every flight lasts T=2u/(gcos⁡θ)=u/4T=2u/(g\cos\theta)=u/4. Along the plane the acceleration is gsin⁡θ=6 m s−2g\sin\theta=6\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}} down the slope and the along-plane velocity is unchanged by the impact. Hence the along-plane velocity at the start of the kk-th flight is (k−1) gsin⁡θ T(k-1)\,g\sin\theta\,T and the distance covered in that flight is dk=12gsin⁡θ T2(2k−1)d_k=\tfrac12 g\sin\theta\,T^2(2k-1). The distance between the 3rd and 4th impacts is the 4th flight: d4=72⋅6⋅u216=21u216d_4=\tfrac{7}{2}\cdot 6\cdot\frac{u^2}{16}=\frac{21u^2}{16}. Setting this equal to 2121 gives u2=16u^2=16, so u=4 m s−1u=4\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. Check: with u=4u=4, T=1 sT=1\ \mathrm{s} and dk=3,9,15,21 md_k=3,9,15,21\ \mathrm{m}, so the 4th flight is 21 m21\ \mathrm{m}.
