One or more options correct

A block AA of mass 2 kg2\ \mathrm{kg} rests on a block BB of mass 4 kg4\ \mathrm{kg}, and BB lies on a smooth horizontal floor. The coefficient of friction between AA and BB is 0.300.30 (static equal to kinetic). A horizontal force FF is applied to AA. Take g=10 m s−2g=10\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. Choose the correct statement(s).
  1. A. For F=6 NF=6\ \mathrm{N} there is no slipping and the friction force on BB is 4 N4\ \mathrm{N}.
  2. B. For F=12 NF=12\ \mathrm{N} the accelerations of AA and BB are 3.0 m s−23.0\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}} and 1.5 m s−21.5\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}} respectively.
  3. C. Slipping between AA and BB begins as soon as FF exceeds 6 N6\ \mathrm{N}.
  4. D. For F=12 NF=12\ \mathrm{N}, AA slides 3.0 m3.0\ \mathrm{m} relative to BB in the first 2 s2\ \mathrm{s} after FF is applied (starting from rest).
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B, D

The maximum friction is fmax=μmAg=0.3×2×10=6f_{max}=\mu m_Ag=0.3\times2\times10=6 N. (A) Without slipping, both move with a=F/6a=F/6; BB is accelerated only by friction, so f=4a=4F/6f=4a=4F/6. For F=6F=6 N this gives a=1 m s−2a=1\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}} and f=4f=4 N, which is below 66 N: correct. (C) Slipping starts when 4F/6=64F/6=6, i.e. F=9F=9 N, not 66 N: incorrect. (B) At F=12F=12 N slipping occurs; AA: aA=(12−6)/2=3.0 m s−2a_A=(12-6)/2=3.0\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}, BB: aB=6/4=1.5 m s−2a_B=6/4=1.5\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}: correct. (D) The relative acceleration is 1.5 m s−21.5\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}, so the relative displacement in 22 s is 12×1.5×4=3.0\tfrac12\times1.5\times4=3.0 m: correct. Hence (A), (B) and (D).
