Single correct option

Two long smooth parallel rails are inclined at 30∘30^\circ to the horizontal and are joined at the top by an ideal capacitor of 0.4 F0.4\ \mathrm{F}. A conducting rod of mass 0.2 kg0.2\ \mathrm{kg} and length 0.5 m0.5\ \mathrm{m} is placed across them, perpendicular to the rails, and released from rest. A uniform vertical magnetic field of 2 T2\ \mathrm{T} exists everywhere. The rails and rod have negligible resistance. Take g=10 m s−2g=10\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. The acceleration of the rod down the incline is
  1. A. 2.0 m s−22.0\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}
  2. B. 5.0 m s−25.0\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}
  3. C. 1.8 m s−21.8\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}
  4. D. 1.7 m s−21.7\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 2.0 m s−22.0\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}

The rod moves along the incline, so only the component Bcos⁡θB\cos\theta of the vertical field normal to the plane of the rails contributes to the flux change, and the motional emf is ε=BLvcos⁡θ\varepsilon=B L v\cos\theta. With no resistance the capacitor voltage equals the emf, q=CBLvcos⁡θq=C B L v\cos\theta, giving a current i=CBLcos⁡θ ai=CBL\cos\theta\,a. The magnetic force on the rod is BiLB i L, whose component along the incline is BiLcos⁡θ=CB2L2cos⁡2θ aBiL\cos\theta=CB^2L^2\cos^2\theta\,a, opposing the motion. Newton's law: mgsin⁡θ−CB2L2cos⁡2θ a=mamg\sin\theta-CB^2L^2\cos^2\theta\,a=ma, so a=gsin⁡θ1+CB2L2cos⁡2θ/ma=\frac{g\sin\theta}{1+CB^2L^2\cos^2\theta/m}. Numerically CB2L2cos⁡2θ=0.4×4×0.25×0.75=0.3CB^2L^2\cos^2\theta=0.4\times4\times0.25\times0.75=0.3, divided by 0.20.2 gives 1.51.5, so a=52.5=2.0 m s−2a=\frac{5}{2.5}=2.0\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. The acceleration is constant.
