Single correct option

A fair die is rolled once. If the number shown is 11 or 22, two balls are drawn together (without replacement) from bag AA containing 33 red and 22 blue balls; otherwise two balls are drawn together from bag BB containing 22 red and 44 blue balls. Given that the two balls drawn are of the same colour, the probability that they came from bag AA is
  1. A. 25\dfrac{2}{5}
  2. B. 310\dfrac{3}{10}
  3. C. 13\dfrac{1}{3}
  4. D. 715\dfrac{7}{15}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 310\dfrac{3}{10}

Use Bayes' theorem. Bag AA is chosen with probability 13\tfrac13 (die shows 1 or 2) and bag BB with probability 23\tfrac23. From AA, P(both red) =3⋅25⋅4=310=\tfrac{3\cdot2}{5\cdot4}=\tfrac{3}{10} and P(both blue) =110=\tfrac{1}{10}, so P(same colour ∣A\mid A) =25=\tfrac25. From BB, P(both red) =2⋅16⋅5=115=\tfrac{2\cdot1}{6\cdot5}=\tfrac1{15} and P(both blue) =4⋅36⋅5=25=\tfrac{4\cdot3}{6\cdot5}=\tfrac25, so P(same colour ∣B\mid B) =715=\tfrac7{15}. Then P(A∣same)=13⋅2513⋅25+23⋅715=6/456/45+14/45=310P(A\mid \text{same})=\dfrac{\frac13\cdot\frac25}{\frac13\cdot\frac25+\frac23\cdot\frac7{15}}=\dfrac{6/45}{6/45+14/45}=\dfrac{3}{10}. The options 2/52/5 and 7/157/15 are the conditional probabilities within a single bag, forgetting the prior weights.
