One or more options correct

A uniform solid cylinder of mass 3 kg3\ \mathrm{kg} and radius RR lies on a rough horizontal floor with its axis horizontal. A light horizontal spring of stiffness 200 N m−1200\ \mathrm{N\,m^{-1}} is attached to the axle and to a fixed wall, and the cylinder is made to execute small oscillations of amplitude 0.1 m0.1\ \mathrm{m} by rolling without slipping. Take g=10 m s−2g=10\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. The angular frequency of oscillation of the axle is 8.2 rad s−18.2\ \mathrm{rad\,s^{-1}}.
  2. B. The maximum magnitude of the friction force on the cylinder during the motion is about 6.7 N6.7\ \mathrm{N}.
  3. C. A coefficient of static friction of 0.200.20 between cylinder and floor is sufficient for the cylinder to keep rolling without slipping.
  4. D. At the mean position the rotational kinetic energy of the cylinder is 13 J\tfrac13\ \mathrm{J}.
Show answer and solution

Answer: B, D

Rolling without slipping couples translation and rotation. With friction ff and axle acceleration aa, Ma=−kx+fMa=-kx+f and the torque about the axis gives f=−12Maf=-\tfrac12Ma (friction opposes the acceleration), hence 32Ma=−kx\tfrac32Ma=-kx and ω2=2k3M=4009\omega^2=\dfrac{2k}{3M}=\dfrac{400}{9}, so ω=203≈6.7 rad s−1\omega=\tfrac{20}{3}\approx6.7\ \mathrm{rad\,s^{-1}}. The value 8.2 rad s−18.2\ \mathrm{rad\,s^{-1}} is k/M\sqrt{k/M}, which ignores rotation, so (A) is wrong. The friction force is largest where aa is largest: amax=ω2A=4.44 m s−2a_{max}=\omega^2A=4.44\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}} so fmax=12Mamax=6.67 Nf_{max}=\tfrac12Ma_{max}=6.67\ \mathrm{N}, making (B) correct. The normal force is Mg=30 NMg=30\ \mathrm{N}, so rolling needs μs≥6.67/30=0.222\mu_s\ge6.67/30=0.222; 0.200.20 is not enough, so (C) is wrong. Total energy is 12kA2=1 J\tfrac12kA^2=1\ \mathrm{J}; at the mean position it is all kinetic with rotational part 14Mv2\tfrac14Mv^2 against translational 12Mv2\tfrac12Mv^2, so one third, 13 J\tfrac13\ \mathrm{J}, is rotational and (D) is correct. Correct options: B and D.
