One or more options correct

A uniform solid sphere of mass mm and radius RR is released from rest on a rough fixed incline of angle θ\theta with sin⁡θ=0.6\sin\theta=0.6 and rolls down without slipping. Take g=10 m s−2g=10\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. The acceleration of the centre of the sphere is 307 m s−2\dfrac{30}{7}\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}
  2. B. The force of static friction on the sphere equals 27mgsin⁡θ\dfrac{2}{7}mg\sin\theta and acts up the incline
  3. C. The minimum coefficient of static friction required for pure rolling is 27\dfrac{2}{7}
  4. D. At every instant the ratio of rotational to translational kinetic energy is 27\dfrac{2}{7}
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B

For rolling without slipping a=Rαa=R\alpha and I=25mR2I=\tfrac25mR^2. Along the incline mgsin⁡θ−f=mamg\sin\theta-f=ma and torque about the centre gives fR=IαfR=I\alpha, so f=25maf=\tfrac25ma. Hence a=57gsin⁡θ=57(10)(0.6)=30/7 m s−2a=\tfrac{5}{7}g\sin\theta=\tfrac57(10)(0.6)=30/7\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}, so (A) is correct. Then f=25m⋅a=27mgsin⁡θf=\tfrac25m\cdot a=\tfrac27mg\sin\theta, directed up the incline because it must supply the torque that spins the sphere, so (B) is correct. The normal force is mgcos⁡θmg\cos\theta, so μmin=f/N=27tan⁡θ=27×34=314\mu_{min}=f/N=\tfrac27\tan\theta=\tfrac27\times\tfrac34=\tfrac{3}{14}, not 2/72/7; (C) is wrong (it forgets the tan⁡θ\tan\theta factor). Finally the rotational and translational energies are 12Iω2=15mv2\tfrac12I\omega^2=\tfrac15mv^2 and 12mv2\tfrac12mv^2, whose ratio is 2/52/5, not 2/72/7 (2/72/7 is the rotational fraction of the total energy); (D) is wrong. Answer: A and B.
