One or more options correct

A uniform solid cylinder of mass mm and radius RR is released from rest on a rough plane inclined at angle θ\theta to the horizontal, with sin⁡θ=0.6\sin\theta=0.6. It rolls down without slipping through a vertical height hh. Let gg be the acceleration due to gravity. Which of the following statement(s) is(are) correct?
  1. A. The acceleration of the centre of mass is 0.4 g0.4\,g.
  2. B. The magnitude of the static friction force is 0.2 mg0.2\,mg.
  3. C. The minimum coefficient of friction required for pure rolling is 0.50.5.
  4. D. When it has descended the height hh, its rotational kinetic energy equals 13mgh\tfrac{1}{3}mgh.
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B, D

For pure rolling of a solid cylinder, I=12mR2I=\tfrac12 mR^2, so a=gsin⁡θ1+I/mR2=0.6 g1.5=0.4 ga=\dfrac{g\sin\theta}{1+I/mR^2}=\dfrac{0.6\,g}{1.5}=0.4\,g, which makes (A) correct. Newton's law along the plane gives mgsin⁡θ−f=mamg\sin\theta-f=ma, hence f=0.6mg−0.4mg=0.2 mgf=0.6mg-0.4mg=0.2\,mg, so (B) is correct. The normal force is mgcos⁡θ=0.8 mgmg\cos\theta=0.8\,mg, so the minimum friction coefficient is f/N=0.2/0.8=0.25f/N=0.2/0.8=0.25, not 0.50.5; (C) is wrong. Rolling kinetic energy splits in the ratio of 12mv2:12Iω2=1:12\tfrac12 mv^2:\tfrac12 I\omega^2=1:\tfrac12, so the rotational part is 1/23/2=13\tfrac{1/2}{3/2}=\tfrac13 of the total energy, which equals mghmgh because static friction does no work; (D) is correct. Answer: A, B, D. Note that friction here is static and does no work, which is why mechanical energy is conserved even though friction is essential to the motion.
