Single correct option

A uniform solid cylinder rolls without slipping with centre speed 4 m s−14\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}} along a rough horizontal floor and then, without any loss of speed, passes onto a perfectly smooth (frictionless) incline of inclination 30∘30^\circ. Take g=10 m s−2g=10\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}}. The distance along the incline travelled by the cylinder before it momentarily comes to rest (centre of mass) is
  1. A. 0.8 m0.8\ \mathrm{m}
  2. B. 1.6 m1.6\ \mathrm{m}
  3. C. 2.4 m2.4\ \mathrm{m}
  4. D. 3.2 m3.2\ \mathrm{m}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1.6 m1.6\ \mathrm{m}

On the smooth incline there is no friction, so no torque acts about the centre of mass and the angular velocity of the cylinder stays constant. The rotational kinetic energy 12Iω2=14mv2\tfrac12 I\omega^2=\tfrac14 mv^2 therefore remains locked in the spin and cannot be converted into height. Only the translational energy 12mv2\tfrac12 mv^2 is available to climb: mgh=12mv2mgh=\tfrac12 mv^2, so h=v2/2g=16/20=0.8 mh=v^2/2g=16/20=0.8\ \mathrm{m}. The distance along the incline is s=h/sin⁡30∘=1.6 ms=h/\sin30^\circ=1.6\ \mathrm{m}. The common mistake is to use 34mv2\tfrac34 mv^2 (rolling on a rough incline), which gives h=1.2 mh=1.2\ \mathrm{m} and s=2.4 ms=2.4\ \mathrm{m}; that applies only when friction converts spin energy. Using hh itself as the distance gives 0.8 m0.8\ \mathrm{m}. Hence option (B).
