One or more options correct

A uniform solid cylinder of mass mm and radius RR is released from rest on a rough incline of angle θ\theta with tan⁡θ=3/4\tan\theta=3/4, its axis horizontal. The coefficient of friction between cylinder and incline is μ\mu (static and kinetic values equal), and gg is the acceleration due to gravity. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. If μ=0.5\mu=0.5, the cylinder rolls without slipping and its centre accelerates at 0.4 g0.4\,g.
  2. B. If μ=0.5\mu=0.5, the friction force on the cylinder is 0.2 mg0.2\,mg, directed up the incline.
  3. C. If μ=0.2\mu=0.2, the cylinder slips; its centre accelerates at 0.44 g0.44\,g and its angular acceleration is 0.32 g/R0.32\,g/R.
  4. D. If μ=0.2\mu=0.2, the cylinder still rolls without slipping, with its centre accelerating at 0.4 g0.4\,g.

Answer: A, B, C

For pure rolling of a solid cylinder, a=gsin⁡θ1+I/mR2=23gsin⁡θ=0.4ga=\dfrac{g\sin\theta}{1+I/mR^2}=\tfrac23 g\sin\theta=0.4g (since sin⁡θ=0.6\sin\theta=0.6), and the friction required follows from mgsin⁡θ−f=mamg\sin\theta-f=ma, giving f=13mgsin⁡θ=0.2 mgf=\tfrac13 mg\sin\theta=0.2\,mg acting up the slope. Rolling without slipping is possible only if f≤μmgcos⁡θf\le\mu mg\cos\theta, i.e. μ≥13tan⁡θ=0.25\mu\ge\tfrac13\tan\theta=0.25. For μ=0.5\mu=0.5 this holds, so (A) and (B) are true. For μ=0.2<0.25\mu=0.2<0.25 the cylinder slips and kinetic friction μmgcos⁡θ=0.16 mg\mu mg\cos\theta=0.16\,mg acts, so a=g(sin⁡θ−μcos⁡θ)=0.44ga=g(\sin\theta-\mu\cos\theta)=0.44g and α=(μmgcos⁡θ)R12mR2=2μgcos⁡θR=0.32 g/R\alpha=\dfrac{(\mu mg\cos\theta)R}{\frac12 mR^2}=\dfrac{2\mu g\cos\theta}{R}=0.32\,g/R; (C) is true. (D) is false because rolling is impossible when μ<0.25\mu<0.25. Always compare the friction required for rolling with its limiting value before choosing the formula, because that decides whether the no-slip relation a=Rαa=R\alpha may be used at all in this problem.
