One or more options correct

A uniform thin rod of mass MM and length LL is hinged at one end so that it can rotate freely in a vertical plane. It is released from rest from the horizontal position. Let gg be the acceleration due to gravity. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. The initial angular acceleration of the rod is 3g/L3g/L.
  2. B. The magnitude of the force exerted by the hinge on the rod just after release is Mg/4Mg/4.
  3. C. The magnitude of the hinge force when the rod is vertical is 3Mg3Mg.
  4. D. The magnitude of the hinge force when the rod is vertical is 5Mg/25Mg/2.
Show answer and solution

Answer: B, D

About the hinge I=ML23I=\frac{ML^2}{3}. At release the torque is MgL2Mg\frac L2, so α=MgL/2ML2/3=3g2L\alpha=\frac{MgL/2}{ML^2/3}=\frac{3g}{2L}, hence (A) is false (it would be double). The centre of mass has acceleration αL/2=3g4\alpha L/2=\frac{3g}{4} downward and no horizontal acceleration, so Mg−N=M3g4Mg-N=M\frac{3g}{4} and N=Mg4N=\frac{Mg}{4}, which makes (B) true. When vertical, energy conservation gives 12⋅ML23ω2=MgL2\frac12\cdot\frac{ML^2}{3}\omega^2=Mg\frac L2, so ω2=3gL\omega^2=\frac{3g}{L}. There is no tangential force there (α=0\alpha=0), and the centripetal requirement is N−Mg=Mω2L2=3Mg2N-Mg=M\omega^2\frac L2=\frac{3Mg}{2}, so N=5Mg2N=\frac{5Mg}{2}. Option (D) is true and (C) is false. Note that the hinge force has both a vertical and, in general, a horizontal component; here the horizontal component is zero at both instants considered because the centre of mass has no horizontal acceleration.
