Numerical answer

A solid sphere of mass mm and radius rr is released from rest at a vertical height h=9.8 mh=9.8\ \mathrm{m} on a rough incline and rolls down without slipping. At the foot it moves on a long rough horizontal stretch and then runs up a perfectly smooth (frictionless) incline, where its spin cannot change. Neglecting all losses, the maximum vertical height (in m\mathrm{m}) it reaches on the smooth incline above the horizontal is

Answer: 7

Rolling without slipping dissipates no energy, so at the foot mgh=12mv2+12Iω2mgh=\tfrac12 mv^2+\tfrac12 I\omega^2 with I=25mr2I=\tfrac25 mr^2 and ω=v/r\omega=v/r. This gives mgh=12mv2(1+25)=710mv2mgh=\tfrac12 mv^2\left(1+\tfrac25\right)=\tfrac{7}{10}mv^2, so the translational kinetic energy is 12mv2=57 mgh\tfrac12 mv^2=\tfrac57\,mgh and the rotational part is 27 mgh\tfrac27\,mgh. On the horizontal rough stretch the sphere keeps rolling at constant vv. On the smooth incline there is no friction torque, hence ω\omega stays constant and the rotational energy 27mgh\tfrac27 mgh is locked in the spin and cannot be converted to potential energy. Only the translational energy is available: mgH=57mghmgH=\tfrac57 mgh, so H=57(9.8)=7 mH=\tfrac57(9.8)=7\ \mathrm{m}. The common mistake is to give H=hH=h by assuming full conversion.
