Single correct option

Neopentyl bromide, (CH3)3CCH2Br(\mathrm{CH_3})_3\mathrm{CCH_2Br}, is heated in ethanol. The major substitution product is
  1. A. (CH3)2C(OC2H5)CH2CH3(\mathrm{CH_3})_2\mathrm{C(OC_2H_5)CH_2CH_3}
  2. B. (CH3)3CCH2OC2H5(\mathrm{CH_3})_3\mathrm{CCH_2OC_2H_5}
  3. C. (CH3)2CHCH(OC2H5)CH3(\mathrm{CH_3})_2\mathrm{CHCH(OC_2H_5)CH_3}
  4. D. (CH3)2C(OH)CH2CH3(\mathrm{CH_3})_2\mathrm{C(OH)CH_2CH_3}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) (CH3)2C(OC2H5)CH2CH3(\mathrm{CH_3})_2\mathrm{C(OC_2H_5)CH_2CH_3}

The substrate is primary but hindered (neopentyl), so SN2\mathrm{S_N2} is extremely slow. Under solvolysis, ionisation is assisted by a 1,2-methyl shift, which converts the unstable primary cation into the tertiary (CH3)2C+CH2CH3(\mathrm{CH_3})_2\mathrm{C^+CH_2CH_3}. Capture by ethanol, then loss of H+\mathrm{H^+}, gives 2-ethoxy-2-methylbutane. The unrearranged ether needs a primary carbocation or SN2\mathrm{S_N2}, and the alcohol would need water as the nucleophile.
