In the cumene process, 240 g240\ \mathrm g of cumene (C9H12\mathrm{C_9H_{12}}, M=120M=120) is converted to phenol (M=94M=94) and acetone (M=58M=58) with an overall yield of 75%75\% of each product. The combined mass of phenol and acetone obtained, in grams, is
Show answer and solution

Answer: 228

Cumene is oxidised by air to cumene hydroperoxide, which is cleaved by dilute acid to phenol and acetone in 1:11:1 mole ratio. Moles of cumene =240/120=2.0=240/120=2.0. At 75%75\% yield, 1.51.5 mol of each product forms. Phenol =1.5×94=141=1.5\times94=141 g and acetone =1.5×58=87=1.5\times58=87 g. Total =141+87=228=141+87=228 g.
