Single correct option

A ketone X\mathrm{X} (C5H10O\mathrm{C_5H_{10}O}) forms an orange precipitate with 2,4-DNP but gives neither a yellow precipitate with I2/NaOH\mathrm{I_2/NaOH} nor a silver mirror with Tollens' reagent. X\mathrm{X} is reduced by NaBH4\mathrm{NaBH_4} to Y\mathrm{Y}, and Y\mathrm{Y} is heated with conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4} to give the major alkene Z\mathrm{Z}. Ozonolysis of Z\mathrm{Z} followed by Zn/H2O\mathrm{Zn/H_2O} gives
  1. A. only propanone
  2. B. ethanal and propanal
  3. C. propanal only
  4. D. methanal and butanal

Answer: (B) ethanal and propanal

The DNP test shows a carbonyl group; no iodoform means no CH3CO−\mathrm{CH_3CO-} unit; no Tollens' result means it is a ketone. Of the C5H10O\mathrm{C_5H_{10}O} ketones, pentan-2-one and 3-methylbutan-2-one both contain CH3CO−\mathrm{CH_3CO-}, so X\mathrm{X} is pentan-3-one, CH3CH2COCH2CH3\mathrm{CH_3CH_2COCH_2CH_3}. NaBH4\mathrm{NaBH_4} gives pentan-3-ol (Y). Acid dehydration follows Saytzeff: the only alkene possible is pent-2-ene, CH3CH=CHCH2CH3\mathrm{CH_3CH=CHCH_2CH_3} (Z). Ozonolysis cleaves the double bond into CH3CHO\mathrm{CH_3CHO} (ethanal) and CH3CH2CHO\mathrm{CH_3CH_2CHO} (propanal).
