If y=tan ^-1 ((1+x)/(1-x)), then dy/dx at x=2 is

Single correct option

If y=tan⁡−1 ⁣(1+x1−x)y=\tan^{-1}\!\left(\dfrac{1+x}{1-x}\right), then dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} at x=2x=2 is
  1. A. 13\frac13
  2. B. 25\frac25
  3. C. 15\frac15
  4. D. 110\frac1{10}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 15\frac15

Since tan⁡−11+x1−x=tan⁡−11+tan⁡−1x\tan^{-1}\frac{1+x}{1-x}=\tan^{-1}1+\tan^{-1}x up to a constant (valid on each branch), dydx=11+x2\frac{dy}{dx}=\frac{1}{1+x^2}. At x=2x=2 this is 15\frac15. Direct differentiation with the chain rule gives the same value after simplifying 2(1−x)2/(1+(1+x)2(1−x)2)=22+2x2\frac{2}{(1-x)^2}\big/\big(1+\frac{(1+x)^2}{(1-x)^2}\big)=\frac{2}{2+2x^2}.
