Single correct option

A rectangle has two vertices on the xx-axis and the other two on the semicircle y=25−x2y=\sqrt{25-x^2}. The maximum possible area of the rectangle is
  1. A. 2424
  2. B. 2525
  3. C. 2020
  4. D. 2522\dfrac{25\sqrt2}{2}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2525

By symmetry take the vertices on the semicircle as (±x,25−x2)(\pm x,\sqrt{25-x^2}) with 0<x<50<x<5. The area is A(x)=2x25−x2A(x)=2x\sqrt{25-x^2}. Maximise A2=4x2(25−x2)A^2=4x^2(25-x^2): setting its derivative 4(50x−4x3)4(50x-4x^3) to zero gives x2=252x^2=\dfrac{25}{2}. Then 25−x2=52\sqrt{25-x^2}=\dfrac{5}{\sqrt2} and x=52x=\dfrac{5}{\sqrt2}, so A=2⋅52⋅52=25A=2\cdot\dfrac{5}{\sqrt2}\cdot\dfrac5{\sqrt2}=25. This is a maximum because A→0A\to0 at both ends x→0,5x\to0,5. The square-like case x=3x=3 gives only 2424.
