Single correct option

Let [t][t] denote the greatest integer not exceeding tt. The number of points in the open interval (0,3)(0,3) at which g(x)=[x2]g(x)=[x^2] is discontinuous is
  1. A. 99
  2. B. 88
  3. C. 66
  4. D. 33
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 88

The function [x2][x^2] is locally constant except where x2x^2 crosses an integer, because x2x^2 is continuous and strictly increasing for x>0x>0. So gg is discontinuous exactly at those x>0x>0 for which x2x^2 is a positive integer. For x∈(0,3)x\in(0,3) we have x2∈(0,9)x^2\in(0,9), so x2=1,2,…,8x^2=1,2,\dots,8, giving x=1,2,3,2,5,6,7,22x=1,\sqrt2,\sqrt3,2,\sqrt5,\sqrt6,\sqrt7,2\sqrt2. That is 88 points. The value x2=9x^2=9 corresponds to x=3x=3, which is outside the open interval, and x2=0x^2=0 is not in the interval either; counting only the integers x=1,2x=1,2 would give a wrong answer.
