Single correct option

Let f(x)=x3f(x)=x^3 for x≤1x\le1 and f(x)=ax2+bx+cf(x)=ax^2+bx+c for x>1x>1. If ff, f′f' and f′′f'' are all continuous at x=1x=1, then abcabc equals
  1. A. 99
  2. B. −3-3
  3. C. 33
  4. D. −9-9
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) −9-9

At x=1x=1 the left side has f=1f=1, f′=3x2=3f'=3x^2=3 and f′′=6x=6f''=6x=6. Continuity of ff requires a+b+c=1a+b+c=1. For f′f': 2a+b=32a+b=3. For f′′f'': 2a=62a=6. Hence a=3a=3, then b=3−6=−3b=3-6=-3, and c=1−a−b=1−3+3=1c=1-a-b=1-3+3=1. Therefore abc=3⋅(−3)⋅1=−9abc=3\cdot(-3)\cdot1=-9. Note that matching only ff and f′f' would leave one parameter free; the extra condition on f′′f'' is what makes the answer unique. The pattern to remember is that continuity of the kk-th derivative at the joining point gives one linear equation per derivative, so three unknown coefficients need three matching conditions. As a final check, the right piece 3x2−3x+13x^2-3x+1 equals 11, 33 and 66 for the function and its first two derivatives at x=1x=1.
