Single correct option

The area of the region common to the circle x2+y2=8x^2+y^2=8 and the parabola y2=2xy^2=2x (that is, points satisfying both x2+y2≤8x^2+y^2\le8 and y2≤2xy^2\le2x) is
  1. A. 2π−432\pi-\dfrac43
  2. B. 2π+432\pi+\dfrac43
  3. C. π+43\pi+\dfrac43
  4. D. 2π+832\pi+\dfrac83
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2π+432\pi+\dfrac43

Substituting y2=2xy^2=2x in the circle gives x2+2x−8=0x^2+2x-8=0, so x=2x=2 and y=±2y=\pm2. The region is symmetric about the xx-axis. For 0≤x≤20\le x\le2 it is bounded by the parabola, and for 2≤x≤222\le x\le2\sqrt2 by the circle. Area =2[∫022x dx+∫2228−x2 dx]=2\left[\int_0^2\sqrt{2x}\,dx+\int_2^{2\sqrt2}\sqrt{8-x^2}\,dx\right]. The first integral is 2⋅23⋅23/2=83\sqrt2\cdot\tfrac23\cdot2^{3/2}=\tfrac83. The second is the circular segment-type area [x28−x2+4sin⁡−1x22]222=2π−(2+π)=π−2\left[\tfrac x2\sqrt{8-x^2}+4\sin^{-1}\tfrac{x}{2\sqrt2}\right]_2^{2\sqrt2}=2\pi-(2+\pi)=\pi-2. So the area is 2(83+π−2)=2π+432\left(\tfrac83+\pi-2\right)=2\pi+\tfrac43. Numerically, 2π+43≈7.622\pi+\tfrac43\approx7.62, which is slightly less than the area of the full circle 8π≈25.18\pi\approx25.1 times its fraction inside the parabola, and a quick sanity check against the bounding rectangle of width 222\sqrt2 and height 44 (area about 11.311.3) confirms the value is reasonable.
