Single correct option

The coefficient of x4x^4 in the expansion of (1+x+x2)6(1+x+x^2)^6 is
  1. A. 7575
  2. B. 120120
  3. C. 6060
  4. D. 9090
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 9090

Choose from each of the six factors either 11, xx or x2x^2. If jj factors contribute xx and mm factors contribute x2x^2, the exponent is j+2m=4j+2m=4. The possibilities are (j,m)=(4,0),(2,1),(0,2)(j,m)=(4,0),(2,1),(0,2). Count the arrangements with multinomial coefficients: (4,0)(4,0) gives (64)=15\binom64=15; (2,1)(2,1) gives 6!2! 1! 3!=60\dfrac{6!}{2!\,1!\,3!}=60; (0,2)(0,2) gives (62)=15\binom62=15. Adding, the coefficient is 15+60+15=9015+60+15=90. Missing the middle case (2,1)(2,1) gives the wrong total 3030.
