Single correct option

The coefficient of x8x^8 in the expansion of (1+x+x2+x3)6\left(1+x+x^2+x^3\right)^6 is
  1. A. 504504
  2. B. 546546
  3. C. 582582
  4. D. 616616
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 546546

Factorise 1+x+x2+x3=(1+x)(1+x2)1+x+x^2+x^3=(1+x)(1+x^2), so the expression is (1+x)6(1+x2)6(1+x)^6(1+x^2)^6. Choose x2kx^{2k} from (1+x2)6(1+x^2)^6 with coefficient (6k)\binom6k, and then x8−2kx^{8-2k} from (1+x)6(1+x)^6 with coefficient (68−2k)\binom6{8-2k}. Non-zero terms occur for k=1,2,3,4k=1,2,3,4: (61)(66)=6\binom61\binom66=6, (62)(64)=225\binom62\binom64=225, (63)(62)=300\binom63\binom62=300, (64)(60)=15\binom64\binom60=15. The sum is 6+225+300+15=5466+225+300+15=546.
