Single correct option

An alkene on reductive ozonolysis (O3\mathrm{O_3}, then Zn/H2O\mathrm{Zn/H_2O}) gives only propanone and propanal. Its reaction with HBr\mathrm{HBr} in the absence of peroxide gives mainly
  1. A. 2-bromo-2-methylpentane
  2. B. 3-bromo-2-methylpentane
  3. C. 2-bromo-4-methylpentane
  4. D. 1-bromo-2-methylpentane
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 2-bromo-2-methylpentane

Joining the carbonyl carbons of (CH3)2C=O\mathrm{(CH_3)_2C=O} and OHC ⁣− ⁣CH2CH3\mathrm{OHC\!-\!CH_2CH_3} gives (CH3)2C=CH ⁣− ⁣CH2CH3\mathrm{(CH_3)_2C=CH\!-\!CH_2CH_3}, 2-methylpent-2-ene. Ionic addition of HBr follows Markovnikov's rule through the more stable tertiary carbocation (CH3)2C+ ⁣− ⁣CH2CH2CH3\mathrm{(CH_3)_2C^+\!-\!CH_2CH_2CH_3}, so Br\mathrm{Br} ends up on C-2: 2-bromo-2-methylpentane. The secondary bromide (3-bromo-2-methylpentane) would form via the less stable secondary cation, and would be formed only if a hydride shift were possible, which would be uphill here.
