Single correct option

A hydrocarbon of formula C5H8\mathrm{C_5H_8} gives a white precipitate with ammoniacal silver nitrate. On vigorous oxidative cleavage with hot alkaline KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} followed by acidification, it gives a carboxylic acid that has a tertiary carbon atom, along with CO2\mathrm{CO_2}. The hydrocarbon is
  1. A. pent-1-yne
  2. B. 3-methylbut-1-yne
  3. C. pent-2-yne
  4. D. 2-methylbuta-1,3-diene
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 3-methylbut-1-yne

The white precipitate with [Ag(NH3)2]+[\mathrm{Ag(NH_3)_2}]^+ shows a terminal alkyne R−C≡CH\mathrm{R-C\equiv CH} (acidic ≡\equivC–H). Strong oxidation breaks the triple bond to give RCOOH\mathrm{RCOOH} and CO2\mathrm{CO_2}. For the product acid to have a tertiary carbon, R\mathrm{R} must be isopropyl: (CH3)2CH−C≡CH→(CH3)2CHCOOH+CO2(\mathrm{CH_3})_2\mathrm{CH-C\equiv CH}\to(\mathrm{CH_3})_2\mathrm{CHCOOH}+\mathrm{CO_2}. This is 3-methylbut-1-yne. Pent-1-yne would give straight-chain butanoic acid, pent-2-yne is internal (no Tollens-type precipitate), and the diene is not an alkyne.
