Single correct option

A hydrocarbon of formula C8H14\mathrm{C_8H_{14}} takes up one mole of H2\mathrm{H_2} over Pd/C and, on ozonolysis followed by Zn/H2O\mathrm{Zn/H_2O}, gives only a single product, octane-2,7-dione. The hydrocarbon is
  1. A. 1,2-dimethylcyclohex-1-ene
  2. B. 1-ethylcyclohex-1-ene
  3. C. 3,4-dimethylcyclohexene
  4. D. 1-methylcycloheptene
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1,2-dimethylcyclohex-1-ene

C8H14\mathrm{C_8H_{14}} has two degrees of unsaturation; one H2\mathrm{H_2} uptake means one C=C\mathrm{C{=}C} and one ring. Cleavage of a ring alkene gives a single acyclic dicarbonyl compound with all 88 carbons. Octane-2,7-dione, CH3CO(CH2)4COCH3\mathrm{CH_3CO(CH_2)_4COCH_3}, arises when the double bond carries one methyl on each carbon and the other four ring carbons are CH2\mathrm{CH_2} groups: 1,2-dimethylcyclohexene. 1-Methylcycloheptene would give a keto-aldehyde, and 1-ethylcyclohexene also gives a keto-aldehyde.
