  3. C. 2ln⁡(1+2)\sqrt2\ln\left(1+\sqrt2\right)
  4. D. 12ln⁡(1+2)\dfrac{1}{\sqrt2}\ln\left(1+\sqrt2\right)
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 12ln⁡(1+2)\dfrac{1}{\sqrt2}\ln\left(1+\sqrt2\right)

Let I=∫0π/2sin⁡2xsin⁡x+cos⁡xdxI=\int_0^{\pi/2}\dfrac{\sin^2x}{\sin x+\cos x}dx. Replacing xx by π2−x\dfrac\pi2-x gives I=∫0π/2cos⁡2xsin⁡x+cos⁡xdxI=\int_0^{\pi/2}\dfrac{\cos^2x}{\sin x+\cos x}dx. Adding, 2I=∫0π/2dxsin⁡x+cos⁡x2I=\int_0^{\pi/2}\dfrac{dx}{\sin x+\cos x}. Write sin⁡x+cos⁡x=2sin⁡(x+π4)\sin x+\cos x=\sqrt2\sin\left(x+\dfrac\pi4\right), so 2I=12∫π/43π/4csc⁡u du=12[ln⁡tan⁡u2]π/43π/4=12ln⁡tan⁡(3π/8)tan⁡(π/8)2I=\dfrac1{\sqrt2}\int_{\pi/4}^{3\pi/4}\csc u\,du=\dfrac1{\sqrt2}\left[\ln\tan\dfrac u2\right]_{\pi/4}^{3\pi/4}=\dfrac1{\sqrt2}\ln\dfrac{\tan(3\pi/8)}{\tan(\pi/8)}. With tan⁡3π8=2+1\tan\dfrac{3\pi}8=\sqrt2+1 and tan⁡π8=2−1\tan\dfrac\pi8=\sqrt2-1 the ratio is (2+1)2(\sqrt2+1)^2, so 2I=22ln⁡(1+2)2I=\dfrac{2}{\sqrt2}\ln(1+\sqrt2) and I=12ln⁡(1+2)≈0.623I=\dfrac1{\sqrt2}\ln(1+\sqrt2)\approx0.623.
