Single correct option

A 25 mL25\ \mathrm{mL} sample of an acidified Fe2+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}} solution requires 20 mL20\ \mathrm{mL} of 0.020 M0.020\ \mathrm{M} KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} for complete oxidation. The volume of 0.010 M0.010\ \mathrm{M} K2Cr2O7\mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7} (in acidic medium) needed to oxidise another 25 mL25\ \mathrm{mL} of the same Fe2+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}} solution is
  1. A. 33.3 mL33.3\ \mathrm{mL}
  2. B. 66.7 mL66.7\ \mathrm{mL}
  3. C. 20.0 mL20.0\ \mathrm{mL}
  4. D. 40.0 mL40.0\ \mathrm{mL}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 33.3 mL33.3\ \mathrm{mL}

MnO4−\mathrm{MnO_4^-} gains 5e−5e^-: n(Fe2+)=5×(20×0.020)=2.0n(\mathrm{Fe^{2+}}) = 5\times(20\times0.020) = 2.0 mmol in 25 mL25\ \mathrm{mL}. Cr2O72−→2Cr3+\mathrm{Cr_2O_7^{2-}} \to 2\mathrm{Cr^{3+}} takes 6e−6e^- per formula unit, so each mL of 0.010 M0.010\ \mathrm{M} dichromate oxidises 6×0.010=0.0606\times0.010 = 0.060 mmol Fe2+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}}. Volume =2.0/0.060=33.3 mL=2.0/0.060 = 33.3\ \mathrm{mL}. Using 33 electrons for dichromate would give 66.766.7.
