Single correct option

10 mL10\ \mathrm{mL} of a hydrogen peroxide sample is diluted to 100 mL100\ \mathrm{mL}. 20 mL20\ \mathrm{mL} of the diluted solution decolourises 25 mL25\ \mathrm{mL} of 0.04 M0.04\ M acidified KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4}. The volume strength of the original sample (volume of O2\mathrm{O_2} at STP from 1 mL1\ \mathrm{mL} of H2O2\mathrm{H_2O_2} on decomposition) is
  1. A. 1.41.4
  2. B. 77
  3. C. 1414
  4. D. 2828
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 1414

2MnO4−+5H2O2+6H+→2Mn2++5O2+8H2O2\mathrm{MnO_4^-+5H_2O_2+6H^+\to2Mn^{2+}+5O_2+8H_2O}. Moles KMnO4=25×0.04=1.0\mathrm{KMnO_4}=25\times0.04=1.0 mmol, so H2O2=52×1.0=2.5\mathrm{H_2O_2}=\tfrac52\times1.0=2.5 mmol in 2020 mL of the diluted solution: 0.125 M0.125\ M. Undoing the ten-fold dilution gives 1.25 M1.25\ M for the original. Since 2H2O2→2H2O+O22\mathrm{H_2O_2\to2H_2O+O_2}, 1 M1\ M gives 11.211.2 mL of O2\mathrm{O_2} (STP) per mL, i.e. 11.211.2 volume. Strength =1.25×11.2=14=1.25\times11.2=14 volume. Forgetting the dilution gives 1.41.4.
