Consider the statements: (i) thermal stability of carbonates of group 2 increases down the group; (ii) LiNO3 on heating gives Li2O, NO2 and O2; (iii)…

Single correct option

Consider the statements: (i) thermal stability of carbonates of group 2 increases down the group; (ii) LiNO3\mathrm{LiNO_3} on heating gives Li2O\mathrm{Li_2O}, NO2\mathrm{NO_2} and O2\mathrm{O_2}; (iii) Be(OH)2\mathrm{Be(OH)_2} is amphoteric; (iv) the hydration enthalpy of Na+\mathrm{Na^+} is more negative than that of Mg2+\mathrm{Mg^{2+}}; (v) solubility of group 2 sulphates increases down the group. The number of correct statements is
  1. A. 5
  2. B. 2
  3. C. 3
  4. D. 4
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 3

(i) True: larger cations polarise carbonate less, so stability rises down the group. (ii) True: lithium nitrate behaves like group 2 nitrates. (iii) True: Be(OH)2\mathrm{Be(OH)_2} dissolves in both acid and alkali. (iv) False: Mg2+\mathrm{Mg^{2+}} is smaller and doubly charged, so its hydration enthalpy is much more negative. (v) False: sulphate solubility decreases down the group (BaSO4\mathrm{BaSO_4} is nearly insoluble). So 3 are correct.
