Single correct option

White phosphorus (P4\mathrm{P_4}, M=124M=124) is heated with excess concentrated NaOH solution, giving phosphine and sodium hypophosphite. From 6.2 g6.2\ \mathrm{g} of P4\mathrm{P_4}, the volume of PH3\mathrm{PH_3} at STP (22.4 L mol−122.4\ \mathrm{L\,mol^{-1}}) and the mass of NaH2PO2\mathrm{NaH_2PO_2} (M=88M=88) formed are, respectively
  1. A. 1.12 L1.12\ \mathrm{L} and 26.4 g26.4\ \mathrm{g}
  2. B. 1.12 L1.12\ \mathrm{L} and 13.2 g13.2\ \mathrm{g}
  3. C. 3.36 L3.36\ \mathrm{L} and 13.2 g13.2\ \mathrm{g}
  4. D. 1.12 L1.12\ \mathrm{L} and 4.4 g4.4\ \mathrm{g}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1.12 L1.12\ \mathrm{L} and 13.2 g13.2\ \mathrm{g}

Balanced reaction (disproportionation of P(0)): P4+3NaOH+3H2O→PH3+3NaH2PO2\mathrm{P_4+3NaOH+3H_2O\to PH_3+3NaH_2PO_2}. Moles of P4=6.2/124=0.050\mathrm{P_4}=6.2/124=0.050. PH3=0.050\mathrm{PH_3}=0.050 mol =0.050×22.4=1.12=0.050\times22.4=1.12 L. NaH2PO2=3×0.050=0.150\mathrm{NaH_2PO_2}=3\times0.050=0.150 mol =0.150×88=13.2=0.150\times88=13.2 g. A common mistake is to use 3 mol of PH3\mathrm{PH_3} per P4\mathrm{P_4} or only 1 mol of hypophosphite.
