Single correct option

An acute-angled line makes angles 60∘60^\circ and 45∘45^\circ with the xx-axis and yy-axis. The angle it makes with the zz-axis is
  1. A. 30∘30^\circ
  2. B. 45∘45^\circ
  3. C. 90∘90^\circ
  4. D. 60∘60^\circ
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 60∘60^\circ

With l=cos⁡60∘=12l=\cos60^\circ=\frac12 and m=cos⁡45∘=12m=\cos45^\circ=\frac1{\sqrt2}, the relation l2+m2+n2=1l^2+m^2+n^2=1 gives n2=1−14−12=14n^2=1-\frac14-\frac12=\frac14, so n=12n=\frac12 (acute) and the angle is 60∘60^\circ. The trap is to subtract the angles from 180∘180^\circ instead of using direction cosines.
