F(x)=e^x is increasing for all real x. 2. f(x)=x^3 is increasing for all real x.

Single correct option

Consider the following statements:
1. f(x)=exf(x)=e^x is increasing for all real xx.
2. f(x)=x3f(x)=x^3 is increasing for all real xx.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
  1. A. 11 only
  2. B. 22 only
  3. C. Both 11 and 22
  4. D. Neither 11 nor 22
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Both 11 and 22

f′(x)=ex>0f'(x)=e^x>0 for all xx, so statement 1 holds. For x3x^3, f′(x)=3x2≥0f'(x)=3x^2\ge0 and vanishes only at x=0x=0, an isolated point, so the function is still strictly increasing on R\mathbb R. Statement 2 also holds. Zero derivative at one point does not stop a function from increasing.
