Rolle's theorem cannot be applied to f(x)=|x| on [-1,1] because

Single correct option

Rolle's theorem cannot be applied to f(x)=∣x∣f(x)=|x| on [−1,1][-1,1] because
  1. A. ff is not continuous on [−1,1][-1,1]
  2. B. f(−1)≠f(1)f(-1)\ne f(1)
  3. C. ff is not defined at x=0x=0
  4. D. ff is not differentiable at x=0x=0
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) ff is not differentiable at x=0x=0

Rolle's theorem needs continuity on [a,b][a,b], differentiability on (a,b)(a,b) and f(a)=f(b)f(a)=f(b). Here ff is continuous and f(−1)=f(1)=1f(-1)=f(1)=1, but at x=0x=0 the left derivative is −1-1 and the right derivative is +1+1, so ff is not differentiable on (−1,1)(-1,1). Trap: continuity is satisfied, so the first two options are false.
